Aleeza is New Blackburn Youth Leader
A 15 year old from Blackburn is the new leader of an iconic youth group in the town.
Aleeza Isa, a Queen Elizabeth Grammar School student, takes over as the new lead for girls group West End Girls. WEGs is the inspirational female empowerment group run by charity One Voice Blackburn.
The multi award-winning group is famed for giving young females from all communities opportunities to take part in ground breaking events and campaigns. Launched in the summer of 2014 WEGs members get to host Blackburn’s premier awards dinner at King George’s Hall. They also take part in debates, visit major cities of the world, and support the local Council’s civic engagement marshalling each year.
Speaking at the Leader’s Launch Aleeza Isa was overcome with joy. “It’s all a bit surreal. I only became a WEG three years ago so it’s crazy to think I am going to be the lead. I just want to work with the girls to learn about what changes they would like to see. And hopefully I can then work with the senior leadership team to implement and deliver those changes. I don’t have any specific targets.”
WEGs members also partake in skydives, volunteering at the One Voice Holiday Clubs, and represent the charity at youth events throughout the country. Aleeza draws inspiration from some of her predecessors.
“I have seen a lot of the leads in action, some of them have been my good friends. It’s a learning curve for me as well. I have tried to meet as many of the girls each weekend. I am sure I will get to know most of them in the next year. I can’t wait to wear the black hoodie, which only the leader is allowed to wear.“
One Voice Blackburn Youth Services Manager Saleha Kassam recommended Aleeza for the role. “Aleeza is not your conventional 15 year old. She is confident but also allows others to thrive in her company and creates a special environment for all the WEGs. She has an infectious personality and will provide a huge amount of energy as Leader.”
